The efficacy of two rehabilitation methods was compared the treatment of unwanted activity of the peroneus longus muscle while contracting the quadriceps muscle. One method (experimental) made use of the operant conditioning technique, in which patients receive auditory feedback about activity in the peroneus longus muscle. In the other method patients were treated using conventional physical therapeutic techniques. The data indicated that the experimental operant technique resulted in better inhibition of unwanted muscle activity. It was suggested that this finding may be due to the more quantitive and more immediate type of feedback employed in the experimental therapeutic situation.
