This article presents the results of a randomized clinical trial (N = 38) evaluating the effect of laser therapy on ankle sprains. All patients had their ankle taped as well (Coumans taping). A comparison was made between a laser group (N = 12), a placebo group (N = 11) and a control group (N = 15). After five days the pain score appeared to have decreased significantly more in the laser group than in the other groups. After seventeen days the decline in pain score is almost similar in all groups. Impairment of sports participation seems to decrease faster in the laser group, but further studies using this effect parameter are indicated.
