The Swedish back school provides information about the natural history of low back pain and instructs ergonomic principles. The usefulness of the back school in (sub) acute low back pain has been demonstrated. In a preliminary study the beneficial effects of the back school in chronic low back pain seemed to be small or absent. It is recommended that patients with low back pain of 6 to 26 weeks duration, or patients suffering from intermittent back complaints, should attend the back school.
