In a double blind study 70 patients aged 19 to 55, suffering from acute or sub-acute epicondylitis or supraspinatus tendinitis were randomised to pulsed ultrasound or placebo ultrasound. The treatment group (37) were given 10 treatments, lasting 4 to 8 minutes with doses ranging from 0.4 to 0.9 W/cm2. The placebo group were also given 10 treatments, lasting from 4 to 8 minutes with doses 0 W/cm2. One week after the treatment the treatment group had significantly lower back pain scores on a continuous visual analogue scale (VAS). There was however no significant difference between the groups based on a subjective assessment of total improvement.
