We studied the effect of intermittent shortwave diathermy (SWD) on effusion of the knee found after meniscectomy in 92 patients. Patients were divided at random in three groups. The first group was treated with a usual dosis daily, the second group received a placebo-treatment and the third group received no SWD. All patients took part in a daily exercise scheme to evaluate the treatment effect in each group. The circumference of the knee was measured at the beginning of the study and one again at the completion. The favourable results of group I and II would seem to be based upon a placebo effect of SWD.
