The efficacy of IR laser treatment on pain was assessed in two homogenous groups of patients suffering from rheumatic joint pathologies. The first group was given standard treatment, the second a placebo. The two groups were selected on a random numerical basis using a double blind formula. Comparison of numerical data using the Scott-Hutchinson visual analogue showed the IR laser was only significantly effective in patients with rheumatism of the small joints of the hand, epicondylitis and non-traumatic gonalgias. The placebo produced non-significant improvement in the group with scapulo-humeral periarthritis and cervical pain. The considerable ambiguities relating to the introduction of these techniques into routine practice are underlined, as is the need for further clinical and biological studies.
