This study has been carried out in order to compare the ultrasound applications which were 1 MHz (deep effect) and 3 MHz (more superficial effect), frequencies. The 21 extremities of 16 patients were randomly divided into two groups. 1 MHz ultrasound was applied to the first group which had 10 cases; 3 MHz ultrasound was applied to the second group, which had 11 cases. Treatment consisted of 20 session. Pain, paraesthesia, superficial touch sensation, functional tests and special tests were evaluated every week and motor and sensory nerve conduction studies were evaluated before and after treatment. The studies were carried out double blindly. Consequently, moderate and severe pain recovery in two groups were statistically significant (p < 0.01). The moderate and severe paraesthesia recovery in two groups were statistically significant also (p < 0.00001). Motor distal latency recovery in the 3 MHz group and sensory latency recovery in both of the groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Motor distal latency did not change in 1 MHz group (p > 0.05). With our study, the effectiveness of ultrasound therapy in carpal tunnel syndrome was demonstrated. But no difference was found between 1 MHz and 3 MHz applications.
