Patients with considerable muscle atrophies after knee joint diseases and injuries underwent similar exercise programmes containing mixed types of strengthening exercises in two test groups. Only the exercise therapy was carried out in group I. In group II the exercise therapy was combined with hydroelectric baths and local heat packs (parafango). Comparing both sides the circumferences of the thigh 15 and 10 cm above the joint cavity, the knees' maximum strength of extension and the maximum potentials of innervation of the m. quadriceps femoris were measured during a 6 weeks' therapy and observation interval. In the course of time the gained data were statistically evaluated and the group differences were examined analysing the variances. On the basis of all the parameters the results show considerable sidediffering starting deficits and a clear reactivation during the course of therapy. Performing the combined therapy group II presented a highly significant and better progression than group I. Possible reasons for the increase of efficiency of the reactivation of motor deficits by means of the combined therapy are discussed.
