systematic review

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT) on upper limb function in hemiplegic cerebral palsy children and observe if it is more effective in children under 4 years or in children over 4 years. METHODS: A critical review of the literature was conducted. The articles were searched on the databases PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL, BDSP and Kinedoc. A descriptive analysis of the results was made. RESULTS: Six articles were selected. The CIMT has a positive effect on upper limb function. This effect is significantly higher compared to conventional therapy. No article comparing children under 4 years with those over 4 years could be found. CONCLUSION: The CIMT is effective for recovery of upper limb function. However, there are large differences between the different treatment protocols. It was not possible to determine whether this effect is greater in children above or below 4 years.
