INTRODUCTION: The chronic low back pain and its related costs is a challenge for physical therapists. The McKenzie method is currently used for the treatment of chronic low back patients, although no literature review evaluated its efficacy in this context. The objective of the current review was to determine the effect of the McKenzie method on pain relief, emotional and physical functioning and global perceived effectin chronic low back patients. METHODS: A literature search has been conducted on the 18 July 2011 on Medline-PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. The quality of all included articles has been judged by three independent reviewers. RESULTS: Three RCT and one follow-up of moderate quality have been identified. The McKenzie method showed a significant (p > 0.05) improvement for all outcomes, in particularly for a short-term pain relief. CONCLUSION: The McKenzie method seems to have a positive effect on chronic low back pain patients. However, more studies and long-term results are needed to confirm this statement. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2.
