AIM: To study the clinical effect of deep-acupuncture jiaji acupoint combined with acupoint-injection on lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and its influence on the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels. METHODS: Deeply-acupuncturing jiaji acupoint combined with acupoint-injection for trial group was compared with acupuncturing back-shu acupoint combined with acupoint-injection for control group to treat LDH. The therapeutic effects of the two group were evaluated by using simplified Mcgill scale and self-designed scoring scale for symptom and physical sign. The changes of IL-6 and IL-8 levels were observed. RESULTS: The total efficiency of the trial group was significantly higher than that of the control group (Chi2 = 6.852, p < 0.05). There were significant differences between the two groups in the sensory and emotional scores of the pain rating index (PRI) (t = 2.871 and 3.15 respectively), total score of PRI (t = 4.40), visual analogue scales (t = 4.92) and the present pain intensity (t = 3.06) in the simplified Mcgill scale (all p < 0.01). The differences of pre-treatment and post-treatment in the symptom and physical sign were found significant between the two groups (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05), and the former group were better than the latter group. The changes of IL-6 and IL-8 levels in the serum of pre-treatment and post-treatment had no significant differences. CONCLUSION: The clinical effect of deep-acupuncturing jiaji acupoint combined with acupoint-injection is better than that of acupuncturing back-shu acupoint combined with point-injection.
