To observe the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at different frequencies and western medicine on acute gouty arthritis. Ninty patients with acute gouty arthritis were divided randomly into medication group, 100 Hz EA and 2 Hz EA groups with 30 cases in each group. Patients were treated by 100 Hz and 2 Hz EA and oral administration of western medicine respectively, and the analgesic effect, analgesic time and the action time were studied in three groups, and the levels of blood uric acid and uric acid in acid were measured before and after treatment. The result indicated that the analgesic time was shorter in 100 Hz and 2 Hz EA groups than that in the medication group (p < 0.01), while the analgesic time was longer in 2 Hz and 100 Hz EA groups in comparison with the medication group (p < 0.01). The analgesic effect in 2 Hz EA group was better than that in the 100 Hz EA group (p < 0.01, and the blood uric acid and uric acid in acid in 2 Hz EA group decreased more than those in the 100 Hz EA group (p < 0.01), while it was similar to that in the medication group (p = 0.05). Therefore EA is an effective method for treating acute gouty arthritis, and the analgesic effect at 2 Hz is better than at 100 Hz EA.
