systematic review

BACKGROUND: Taping is a trendy taping technique, created in Japan in the 1970s. There is an important number of publications about the subject, but they do not all have the same level of evidence. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of systematic reviews dealing with KT and appraising the methodological quality, the range of levels of evidence of results and strength of recommendation of each of them. METHODS: A literature search was conducted from September 2012 to November 2013 using 6 databases with a search query involving "systematic review OR meta-analysis" with several terms referring to KT. Methodological quality of RS was assessed by R-AMSTAR tool, the range of levels of evidence of results by a scale from an article of van Tulder et al and strength of recommendation by the Ex-GRADE instrument. RESULTS: The literature search gives 13 systematic reviews: 7 in English and 6 in Spanish. On average, the methodological quality and strength of recommendation of SR are low and the range of levels of evidence of their results is very heterogeneous. Within-group results generally show beneficial effects of Taping while between-group results highlight heterogeneous effects with overall, in case of statistically significant effects, a lack of information on the effect size. CONCLUSION: The higher levels of evidence, the less scientific evidence are in favour of using taping in clinical practice. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 1.
