SUMMARY: The efficacy of the McKenzie method of mechanical diagnosis and therapy in chronic low back pain has been little assessed. METHOD: Fourteen patients with directional preference were divided randomly into two groups: the McKenzie method or conventional treatment. Functional impact and the pain topography were assessed after 6 sessions. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: There is no proof of superiority for the McKenzie method in chronic low back pain with directional preference. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2.
