The effects of structured running were investigated during the withdrawal of patients suffering from chronic alcoholism. 14 running patients were compared with 12 non-running. The period of investigation was 4 weeks. Psychological tests and simple physiological instruments were used in the measurement. In contrary to some results of former scientific work only trait-anxiety showed significant difference (p = 0.027) between the two groups. All other measured parameters failed to show significant differences. Regarding the immediate change of mood through running, mood and state anxiety significantly improved (p = 0.01) in the running group. The results indicate that running seems to be less adequate as a supporting somatic therapy in alcohol-withdrawal, but appears to be a valuable psychological therapy for these patients.
