The aim of the study was to compare the changes in body composition and physical fitness in overweight and obese training intermittent exercise and continuous exercises in a 12-week weight loss program. Controlled randomized clinical study with 33 adults overweight and sedentary submitted to two types of exercise: intermittent and continuous. Body mass were collected, abdominal circumference and hip, weight in fat, weight, lean mass and body fat percentage, and physical fitness variables. We used two-way ANOVA for data analysis, and 5% significance level. The sample had a mean age 32.71 +/- 11.92 years in the intermittent group and 32.31 +/- 10.75 years in the continuous group. There was weight loss of more than 7 kg (p < 0.005) and improvement of lower limb strength, speed, agility and endurance in both training groups (p < 0.05). The results suggest that regular practice of moderate exercise in untrained obese individuals is sufficient to promote improvements in body composition and physical condition independent of the type of training conducted.
