This article reports on the first part of a more detailed randomized study, and describes the effects of information and relaxation groups in 38 bronchial asthma patients. In eight two-hour sessions, the patients were comprehensively informed about the origin, course and treatment of their illness; in a number of sessions particular attention was devoted to the individual anxiety of the patients, and this was followed by a course of autogenic training. On conclusion of the group sessions, a psychometric improvement in anxiety, insomnia, dyspnoea and the subjective need to cough, was observed while the control group did not show this improvement. Objective lung function parameters did not change in the treated group. The long-term effect of reduction in anxiety on compliance, drug consumption and hospitalisation, and the effect of information and relaxation groups on objective lung function are presently being investigated in enlarged patient groups.
