Many studies have shown the benefit of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the quadriceps for exercise capacity in chronic obstructive pneumonia disease (COPD) patients. However, only one study has been published concerning triceps surae stimulation. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of combined triceps and quadriceps NMES versus isolated quadriceps NMES on exercise capacity, triceps and quadriceps strength and endurance, quality of life and dyspnea. A randomized pilot study between Q (PRP plus quadriceps NMES) and Q+T (PRP plus quadriceps and triceps NMES) groups prospectively included 11 patients with stage 3 or 4 COPD, admitted to hospital for a 4-week pulmonary rehabilitation program (PRP). All Q+T group patients showed improved exercise capacity, quadriceps endurance and strength and triceps surae strength. Combined quadriceps and triceps surae NMES programs can be used in PRPs without negative effects. These encouraging results need to be confirmed in a larger-scale study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3.
