Consumer Summary: PERSPECTIVES: Numerous athletes with PT use a patellar strap or sports tape during sports trying to reduce pain. This study is the first to investigate the effect of these orthoses in PT. Results show that a patellar strap and sports tape reduced pain on the short-term compared with control; however, both were not more effective than placebo taping. The long-term effect remains unknown. Based on the suggested working mechanisms, the use of a strap or tape can positively influence the tendon by reducing patellar tendon strain (Lavagnino et al, 2011) or by improving proprioception (de Vries et al, 2015). Their use can also have negative consequences on the tendon structure when the effect is foremost analgesic (Farkas et al, 1997) because athletes may continue to put high stress on the tendon since they experience less pain. There is a need for research where changes in the tendon structure as a result of wearing an orthosis are measured. Furthermore, predictors of effectiveness should be investigated in order to give personalized advice. Nevertheless, this study provides initial evidence about the effectiveness of orthoses on patellar tendon pain -- an important first step toward evidence-based guidelines for the use of these orthoses in athletes with PT.
