Title: The impact of supervised exercise training on traditional cardiovascular risk factors in patients with intermittent claudication: a systematic review and meta-analysis [with consumer summary]
Source: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery 2019 Jul;58(1):75-87
Method: systematic review
Method Score: This is a systematic review. Systematic reviews are not rated.
Consumer Summary: WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: This systematic review and meta-analysis shows for the first time that supervised exercise training in patients with intermittent claudication has the potential to reduce cardiovascular risk factors in addition to improving pain free and maximum walking distance. Moreover, this report highlights the lack of data on the effect of claudication limited exercise on cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, this paper can encourage other exercise researchers to evaluate cardiovascular risk outcomes and therefore study the added value of exercise in secondary prevention of peripheral artery disease.
