| Consumer Summary: | WHAT IS KNOWN: The effectiveness of physical exercise in preventing falls in the older people in the community has been proven. Studies indicated that physical exercise might reduce falls in the nursing home, but the evidence was inconsistent. WHAT IS NEW: Exercise may be effective in reducing falls. Long-term exercise can reduce the number of fallers in nursing homes, while short-term exercise cannot. Balance exercise can prevent falls in nursing homes. The findings of exercise duration and type may support optimal exercise planning. Considering the economic benefits, long-term balance exercise might be taken as a routine nursing measure in nursing homes. |
