| Consumer Summary: | QUICK POINTS: Supervised PFMT and use of a vaginal cone in the first year after birth led to a reduced incidence of urinary incontinence (UI) among postpartum women. Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) or electrical stimulation combined with other therapies was shown to have a decreasein the severity of UI in the first year after birth for postpartum women. Electrical stimulation and biofeedback therapy plus core training, as well as supervised PFMT, demonstrated the greatestimprovement in UI-specific quality of life for postpartum women in the first year after birth. Conservative interventions can increase the muscle strength and elasticity of pelvic floor muscles, facilitating the return ofnormal pelvic floor function among postpartum women. |
